BOSTON – January 3, 2024 – MassHousing in 2023 awarded a total of $679,837 in grant funding to help preserve or create 98 affordable sober housing units and provide supportive services to men, women and families impacted by substance use disorder. BOSTON – November 17, 2022 – MassHousing has awarded a total of $143,332 in grant funding to help preserve 22 affordable sober housing units and provide supportive services to men, women, and children impacted by substance misuse. The grants come from the Center for Community Recovery Innovations, Inc. (CCRI), a nonprofit subsidiary corporation of MassHousing that helps nonprofits create or preserve affordable sober housing in Massachusetts for individuals in recovery.
Victory Programs, Inc., Boston, $25,000
Grant funds will be used for startup costs for the Victory Connector, a new program to provide services for individuals at Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard in Boston. Each guest can expect a clean bed, sufficient clothing storage, HDTV w/ cable and free wifi in every room inside a clean, well maintained home cared for by the guests who stay there!

Mental Health Association, Holyoke, $28,837
Grant funds will support renovations to preserve 16 units of sober housing for LGBTQ+ individuals in Holyoke. SEMCOA, Inc., and High Point, New Bedford, $200,000
Grant funds will be used help acquire property to create four new units of sober housing for women mash certified sober homes and children in New Bedford. Effective September 1, 2016, state agencies and their vendors are only able to refer clients to certified alcohol and drug-free (ADF) housing. In accordance with this requirement, MASH serves as the primary agency for accountability of all certified homes in Massachusetts.

To date, CCRI has awarded more than $15.5 million in grants for the creation or preservation of nearly 3,000 units of substance-free housing, in 54 communities, serving recovery populations that include men, women, families, veterans, and the LGBTQ+ community. Our programs
These standards were developed using a collaborative approach with input from regional and national recovery housing organizations. MASH is an affiliate of NARR and used these standards to create Massachusetts standards for certified sober homes. The third version of the NARR standards https://ecosoberhouse.com/ provides more explicit guidance to providers, including metrics for evaluating the peer support components of a residence’s recovery environment. The Center for Community Recovery Innovations, Inc., issues an annual Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit projects for funding.

Grant funds will help create 14 new affordable sober housing units for individuals in advanced recovery in Allston. South Middlesex Non-Profit Housing Corporation, Worcester, $14,750
MassHousing grant funds will help rehabilitate 19 single-room occupancy units of affordable sober housing for women at Pax House in Worcester. Are you a state agency, licensed provider, individual, or family looking for a MASH-certified sober home? All MASH-certified sober homes follow the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) standards and have been independently inspected.

GAAMHA, Gardner, $75,000
MassHousing grant funds will help acquire and rehabilitate a four-bedroom sober home for eight residents in Gardner. Massachusetts Department of Public Health has initiated a voluntary certification process for Sober Homes. Also known as Recovery Homes, Sober Homes are places for individuals to live to support their early stages of sobriety after residential substance abuse treatment. A New Beginning, a Sober Home located in Dorchester was the first to be inspected on January 20, 2016. RIZE Massachusetts is an independent nonprofit foundation working to end the opioid epidemic in Massachusetts and reduce its devastating impact on people, communities, and our economy. Amenities include on site laundry, air conditioning, parking, full kitchens, living/dining rooms and quick access to public transportation.
- Our organization also provides supervision and training for sober homes, and maintains a database of more than 180 MASH-certified sober homes.
- Other proposals that provide services for residents in MassHousing-financed rental housing, specifically those that address alcohol and/or drug abuse or addiction, are also considered for funding.
- Successful sober homes establish and reinforce healthy lifestyles, provide a safe and stable place to live, conduct meaningful activities, and build relationships and social networks for support.
